Questions and Answers

what the best way of getting in to the field of web site design?

A) There are a few ways to do this. 1. Go and do a course on web design at your local college. 2. Teach yourself. The way i started was to make my own website, there are loads of tutorials on the web and some free design software. It really isn't difficult to design a site, but it's harder to design a good site.

Best T-shirt design web-site?

Q) Just wondering if anybody out there uses them much and can recommend any? Quality of goods + variety of options (different style tops, different colours + designs etc.) would be a major consideration + UK based one's would be a bonus, but not essential.

A) Try: http://www.tshirtstudio.com/ They are UK based with good quality items, fast service and reasonably priced. Could possibly have more designs/choices though.

Web site design, is there a free no ads professional way to do it?

Q) I have recently started a company and need to get my web site up and running. Whats the best way to do it. I have designed the pages in MS Word just as a starting point, have down loaded different web page design software Serif Web Plus for one and they seem limited in what you can do. What is the best software to use on a budget. I also have registed my domain name but they do not host websites, where do I upload my website to and is there a cost?

A) Hell nobody spoke about Google Apps For Your domain. It offers you not only free hosting but also provides you upto 200 or more Email IDs at your domain.com (Gmail style, with lot of other features like Google page creator, calendar, Google Talk, start page etc). If you already have a domain name, you just have to visit at http://google.com/a and register for your domain. If you don't have a domain name yet then you can purchase a domain name for $10. You can read the Help documents there. In case you have any issues with setting up your account you can join Google group for more help. In case you are just looking for a free ad-free host you can check out the list at http://www.free-webhosts.com/ Hope this helps -- Ck http://www.gfour.net

Where can I get good advice on web site design?

Q) I know that Dreamweaver is the best program to get and I can learn to use it, but I would like guidance on the actual design process and how Dreamweaver can aid it, along with Do's and Don'ts on web design. What is the best way to actually go about designing etc. Dreamweaver will obviously start you off with a blank page, I want to learn how to start creating great pages.

A) You can learn from a number of websites tips and tricks to help you along - I'm sure that a google search would bring up quite a few very quickly - HOWEVER, speaking from experience, forget the websites that people will offer you and do one of two things: a) Go to your local college and sign up for a course in web design. Make sure the course covers Dreamweaver and *not* MS Frontpage. If the course is still teaching Frontpage (known in the business as being an absolute no-no), it is likely that any other tips they will give you will also hinder rather than help. OR b) If you're really serious about getting into web design, there is no better place to learn than on the job. Many web design companies hire "junior web designers" who only have a basic understanding of the methodology, so that they can mould them and train them into how they like to work. Each web company has different practices, so more often than not you will find that nowadays the majority of web jobs available are junior positions. There is no subsititute for learning this way....no training course, no book and *definitely* no website. If you don't want to choose a career in web design, then definitely consider the night course route. Get yourself on a decent training course and learn how to do things professionally. Good luck!

does anyone know a good design website to start a business based web site?

Q) im wanting to start a web based business but cant find a good web design site if anyone know of one please let me know and if i can disgne it my self the please get back to me asap thanks

A) If you mean just the graphics and layout detail, then that is fine. But, the features your website offers and how people are going to navigate around your website is really important. I think the answer is that you should design most of the website yourself. On paper, put every possible feature for the website you could want, and maybe even draw examples. Next, use a scanner to scan them into your computer. Finally, submit your website idea to RENTACODER.com. Instruct bidders to include a link to their portfolio in their bid, so you can see what their websites have looked like in the past. There surely must be thousands of well-qualified web-developers on rentacoder who can design your website properly, but you should be the one to instruct them how to design it. If you decide to go this route, place a link in the details section and maybe I'll bid on it. I've used Rentacoder and am very happy with my results. Just remember it is very similar to being a good supervisor, in that you shouldn't be a jerk pointlessly and should be polite but you do have to demand things of your workers. And as mentioned, you need to already know exactly what you want. From your question, it seems like you may not have thought about it a lot. The same would be true if you were to hire a design agency or use another website to do the work.

Web site design?

Q) Where can I find people that need a web site designed? Is there a forum or anything?

A) http://casavista.net/

I am looking to set up a website where people can pay to post pictures. What are the best web design sites?

Q) Web design Site, low cost or free, e commererce

A) You need to learn web design, how to translate that desing into code; then get a web host and a domain name. Since photos are big you'll need a lot of server space, and enough bandwidth. If people pay to use your site they will want their money back if they go to use their account and can't because you ran out of bandwith for the month. There are already many sites that offer this service free of charge, go round a few and see what you can offer thats different. Try Photobucket, Pbase and Deviant Art to get an idea of whats out there, they all offer a different service. As for web design and hosting yours won't be a straightforward design job and I'd suggest you see a web designer, some offer free consultations and they may be able to show you what you're letting yourself in for. You also have legal issues such as copyright and other problems to take into account. Check out www.1and1.co.uk for their web hosting services for an idea of cost.

web site design.CSS problem?

Q) Hey people, I am currently trying to design a website using CSS.I have a little problem. When I view the website with firefox web browser, theres no problem but if I use internet explorer, theres a big gap between the three columns and my footer.Could someone please help me with a solution.Heres the web link. Website - http://stuweb.cms.gre.ac.uk/~ds503/ CSS - http://stuweb.cms.gre.ac.uk/~ds503/main.css Cheers

A) Well, the problem is actually not your problem. The four major Internet browsers render the pages differently, yet you must know this: + Opera, Firefox and Safari follow Internet standards from the W3C. + Internet Explorer does not (another so-called Microsoft attempt to keep its monopoly). That said, design your page for Firefox, Opera, Safari (and, if you can, also Konqueror). Then make adjustments for Internet Explorer including conditional CSS attributes in the CSS page. Hope this helps.

What is the best web site design program?

Q) I currently use Microsoft Frontpage but you can only make boxy web sites with it, no curves or rounded corners to the boxes. Thanks for the input.

A) No web design program will create curves for you. That is graphic design work done with Photoshop or similar software. The images are then positioned and duplicated by CSS as necessary to give the illusion of curved design elements. Learn how to use the Slice feature in Photoshop/ImageReady and learn a bit of CSS.
